Rat, gubitak i sećanje jasno su obeležili ovogodišnja obeležavanja Ašure u Libanu i Iranu. Fotografije prikupljene i urednički odabrane od strane AP prikazuju masovne povorke, rituale tuge i tragove nedavnih sukoba koji su oblikovali način na koji vernici pamte Husejna, unuka proroka Muhameda.
Dahiyeh (Bejrut)
U Dahiyehu, južnom predgrađu Bejruta, desetine hiljada ljudi učestvovale su u usklađenim povorkama. Učesnici su udarali grudima i ponavljali ritmičke pokrete u znak žalosti za Husejnom i za članovima porodica koji su stradali u nedavnom ratu između Hezbolaha i Izraela. U iranskoj prestonici, Teheranu, hiljade vernika okupile su se na ceremonijama i povorkama. Mnogi su udarali glavama i grudima u znaku žalosti, dok su grupe vernika sa bakljama palile šatore u reenactmentu bitke iz 680. godine — događaja iz Karbale koji je centralan za obeležavanje Ašure.
