U skromnoj drvenoj kući u Sardinalu, oko 20 minuta vožnje od pacifičke obale Kostarike, Jose Flores provodi dane drijemajući, jedući obroke koje sprema njegova unuka i povremeno nadmećući se snagom ruku s njom. Porodica i zvanični dokumenti navode da je Flores star 119 godina, ali međunarodna verifikacija njegovog datuma rođenja još traje dok stručnjaci pregledaju istorijske spise.
Život u Plavoj zoni Nicoya
Sardinal se nalazi na poluostrvu Nicoya, jednoj od pet svetskih regija poznatih kao Plave zone — područjima u kojima ljudi češće dostižu duboku starost i imaju dobru funkcionalnu vitalnost. Lokalni stanovnici dugovečnost povezuju s vodom bogatom kalcijumom i magnezijumom, tradicionalnom ishranom zasnovanom na kukuruzu i pasulju, svakodnevnim fizičkim radom i snažnim porodičnim i zajedničkim vezama.

Prema ličnoj legitimaciji, Flores je rođen 11. jula 1907. Udruženje Plave zone poluostrva Nicoya navodi da poseduje opsežnu dokumentaciju — od izvatka iz matične knjige rođenih i krštenice do dokumenata koji potvrđuju njegov identitet u kasnijim decenijama. Međunarodne organizacije, uključujući Guinness World Records i druge stručnjake za dugovečnost, trenutno proveravaju te spise pre nego što se zvanično potvrdi rekord.

Trenutno najstarija živa osoba na svetu je Ethel Caterham iz Velike Britanije (rođena 21. avgusta 1909), koja je 2026. napunila 117 godina i preuzela titulu nakon smrti brazilskog časnog lica Inah Canabarro Lucasa u aprilu 2025.
