Rumunski azil Smeura, uz podršku nemačke organizacije Tierhilfe Hoffnung, sprovodi pilot-program koji svakog jutra šalje osam mobilnih veterinarskih jedinica u sela kako bi besplatno sterilizovao pse. Cilj je ponuditi održivu alternativu eutanaziji i u narednih pet godina identifikovati, vakcinisati, registrovati i masovno sterilizovati životinje. Do sada je ove godine izvedeno skoro 40.000 sterilizacija, ali se problem velikog broja lutalica u Rumuniji i dalje oseća.

Svakog jutra u zoru osam veterinarskih kombija izlazi iz azila Smeura, smeštenog duboko u šumi u centralnoj Rumuniji, i kreće ka okolnim selima gde besplatno sterilizuju pse. Projekat, koji sprovodi nemačka organizacija za dobrobit životinja Tierhilfe Hoffnung, ima cilj da ponudi održivu alternativu politici hvatanja i eutanazije lutalica.
Rumunija je 2013. godine legalizovala hvatanje i eutanaziju životinja nakon fatalnog napada na dete. Iako su azili i nevladine organizacije poslali hiljade pasa na usvajanje, animalisti procenjuju da zemlja i dalje ima jednu od najvećih populacija lutalica u Evropi — oko 500.000 životinja.
Smeura je prošle godine poslala na usvajanje više od 2.200 pasa, ali pritisak stalnog priliva ostaje. "Psi i dalje pristižu," kaže Matthias Schmidt, menadžer Tierhilfe Hoffnung. "Ako želimo da rešimo problem, moramo masovno i intenzivno sterilizovati kako bismo postigli rezultate."
"U narednih pet godina želimo da rešimo problem: identifikacijom pasa, vakcinacijom protiv besnila, registracijom u nacionalni program i sterilizacijom," rekao je Schmidt.
Međunarodna organizacija Four Paws ranije ove godine objavila je istragu koja ukazuje na sistemsko zapostavljanje, prenatrpanost i zloupotrebe u javno finansiranim azilima, što je pojačalo pozive da se prakse eutanazije preispitaju.
Do sada je ove godine Smeura obavio skoro 40.000 sterilizacija, obuhvatajući kako lutalice tako i kućne ljubimce, kroz mobilne jedinice i u samom azilu — jednom od najvećih na svetu, smeštenom na lokaciji nekadašnje farme lisica.
U selu Cateasca stalni priliv vlasnika doveo je svoje ljubimce na postupak. "Procedura je dobra i za životinje i za bezbednost ljudi," kaže Iulian Stoica, koji je dovezao tri psa. "Bolje je ne pretrpavati ulice napuštenim štenadima."
Organizatori ističu da je masovna sterilizacija, u kombinaciji sa registracijom, vakcinacijom i edukacijom stanovništva, ključna za dugoročno smanjenje broja lutalica. Ipak, izazov ostaje: potrebna su dodatna sredstva, državna podrška i koordinacija kako bi se uspeh pilot-programa proširio na širu teritoriju.
