Milioni šiitskih muslimana iz Iraka i sveta danas se slivaju u irački sveti grad Karbala na godišnje okupljanje Arbaeen, koje se ubraja među najveće verske skupove na svetu. Mnogi hodočasnici pešače i po nekoliko dana da bi stigli do svetišta.
Put i podrška: Dok neki prelaze granice iz susednih zemalja, uključujući Iran, drugi nastavljaju peške preko kontrolnih punktova. Duž ruta, stotine dobrovoljaca i organizovanih punktova obezbeđuju hranu, vodu, osveženje i smeštaj za one koji učestvuju u ovom hodočašću.
Istorijsko i versko značenje: Arbaeen obeležava 40 dana posle Ašure — dana sećanja na mučeništvo imama Husejna 680. godine u bici kod Karbale. Njegova smrt smatra se ključnim događajem u istoriji šiitskog islama i inspiracijom za generacije vernika.
Kulminacija i rituali: Hodočašće kulminira kod Svetilišta imama Husejna i obližnjeg Svetilišta imama Abbasa, gde milioni ljudi učestvuju u molitvama i obredima žalosti. Među uobičajenim demonstracijama poštovanja su udaranje grudima u znak tuge, zajedničke molitve i dodiri svetilišta.
