Na Havajima su u martu nizovi kona low sistema doneli istorijske količine padavina i lokalne katastrofe. Neke lokacije su prijavile i do 54,92 inča (≈1.395 mm) kiše, što je dovelo do poplava, nestanka domova i hitnih evakuacija u severnim oblastima Oahua.
Istovremeno, zapadne savezne države iskusile su dugoćiveći toplotni talas pod uticajem postojanog visokog pritiska — došlo je do rušenja mesečnih temperaturnih rekorda u najmanje 11 saveznih država. Kako su ovi događaji povezani?
Naučnici ističu da su džet strim i planetarni talasi ključni prenosioci uticaja između regiona. Kada džet strim uspori i postane vijugav, obrazci se pojačavaju — isti sistemi mogu dugo ostati nad određenim oblastima, donoseći ponavljajuće kona low, atmosferske reke u Pacifičkom severozapadu, ili produžene talase vrućine na zapadu.
«Obrasci se hrane jedni drugim i pokreću vreme preko kontinenta», rekao je Daniel McEvoy iz Western Regional Climate Center.
Detalji o padavinama i šteti na Havajima
Preliminarni podaci Nacionalne meteorološke službe pokazuju ekstremne količine: do 52 inča (≈1.321 mm) na Oahuu, 54,92 inča (≈1.395 mm) na Summitu na Mauiju i 42,2 inča (≈1.072 mm) na Puu Waawaa na ostrvu Havaji. Poplave su odnele domove i natkrile naselja poput Waialue; zbog opasnosti od kvara brane Wahiawa, više hiljada ljudi je evakuisano.
Toplotni talas na zapadu
Stalni visok pritisak sprečio je padavine i omogućio je višenedeljne trocifrene temperature. Stručnjaci upozoravaju da klimatske promene menjaju raspodelu ekstremnih događaja i povećavaju verovatnoću i intenzitet toplih talasa. Istovremeno, nagle temperaturne oscilacije (»whiplash«) i dalje zbunjuju javnost, jer su mnogi građani navikli na blaže zime.
